What to do if you smell gas?
Here at North West Cooker Repairs, we may only repair and install Gas Cookers, but we can also advise you on anything to do with your cooker and the gas pipes attached to it. But what do you actually do if you smell gas?
Over time, your gas cooker can break and need to be repaired but sometimes before you get chance to have the repair work carried out, the cooker or the gas pipes running to it can break and leave you with the problem of gas. So what do you do if you think you have a gas leak?
Firstly, you want to make sure you and your family are safe before calling 0800 111 999. If you need to call this from your mobile, make sure you have vacated the property first as the waves causing the phone to receive signal can mix with gas problem. Secondly you want to make sure that all of your doors and windows are open to allow the fumes to escape. You must never allow a naked flame in the house while you suspect a gas leak may be happening or use any electrical appliances as this can cause the gas to explode and can be deadly. Finally you want to make sure that you haven’t left a gas appliance on without realising and then turn your gas off at the meter if you know how before waiting for the emergency service to arrive.
Your gas distributor is responsible for dealing with gas leaks and emergencies in their area and will come to fix the problem for you free of charge. If the leak is in your home, they can make it safe by turning off the supply and if the engineer can fix the leak quickly, they will. However if they cannot, they will isolate the appliance to prevent unsafe use and turn the gas back on, if it is safe to do so. This is where we come in if you have a faulty gas cooker and can repair the appliance for you!
Once the gas pipes have been fixed, you may need your cooker installing again for you, if that is the case our Gas Cooker Installations are the best service in the North West and the cheapest too! If you’d like to find out more then please don’t hesitate to get into contact with us today!
