Here at North West Cooker Repairs we are the North West’s leading Gas Cooker Repair and Installation company, today we will be talking about Gas Safety Risks and why you should avoid messing with your gas pipes if you aren’t qualified to do so.
In some rare cases, badly fitted, poorly serviced or faulty gas appliances can put you and your family or friends at risk of gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Gas leaks are a common occurrence from faulty gas appliances and pipework. Un-burnt natural gas and LPG aren’t poisonous to you in the same way that carbon monoxide is, though both of them can lead to fires and explosions. So that you can detect if you have a gas leak, an odorant is added to gas which makes it easy to smell and is the reason you know what gas smells like. To avoid gas leaks at home, make sure you take care with and look after your gas pipework and any damages or rusting should be examined by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
By nature, gas is a highly combustible substance. If it is correctly fitter and maintained, gas appliances make sure that it is burned in a safe and controlled manner to heat you home and be used for cooking purposes. However, sometimes gas can leak from a faulty appliance or pipe and can spread rapidly, giving it a huge risk of accidental ignition which can cause fire or explosions.
Badly fitted and poorly maintained appliances can produce a very highly poisonous gas called carbon monoxide which can leak into your home. As it is colourless, tasteless and odourless, you cannot see, taste or smell it but it can kill you very quickly and with no warning at all. If it isn’t noticed and taken care of, it can also cause long term health problems such as brain damage. There are six main symptoms to carbon monoxide poisoning and they are very similar to those of flu, food poisoning or viruses and people commonly mistake this kind of poisoning with something else. These symptoms are headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapsing and loss of consciousness. Luckily, there are tools around to help us battle carbon monoxide poisoning such as carbon monoxide detectors which can be potentially lifesaving pieces of equipment.
