Gas Safe Engineers – Why should you choose one?
If you are having gas work done in your home or workplace, you should only ever use a Gas Safe registered engineer. Gas Safe registered engineers are the only people who can legally carry out gas work, such as gas cooker repairs within your home or business and it is very important to remember this when you decide to have gas work done in your home, otherwise you could be at serious risk.
Make sure your engineer is Gas Safe registered!
All gas engineers should lawfully be on the Gas Safe Register to legally be able to work with gas. Before you employ a gas engineer to carry out gas work for you, you should always make sure that they are Gas Safe registered and when the engineer arrives to complete the job, you should always ask to see their Gas Safe Register ID card before allowing them to begin the job, otherwise, your home or business has the potential for problems.
What work can be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer?
All forms of gas work both inside and outside your home or business should be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Different types of gas work include:

  • Gas cooker repairs
  • Gas cooker servicing
  • Gas cooker installations
  • Gas fire repairs
  • Gas fire servicing
  • Gas fire installations

However, something that you should remember before getting any work done is to check your gas engineer is qualified to do the gas work that you need as not every gas engineer is qualified to do every type of gas work, you may find that a gas fire repairman cannot repair a gas cooker or vice versa.
What about working with gas yourself?
You should never do it yourself with gas. Not only are you putting your property in danger, you are putting yourself and your family or colleagues in serious danger from carbon monoxide poisoning and gas explosions. Unless you yourself are a Gas Safe registered engineer, it is never a good idea to work with gas.
Are you a landlord or a tenant?
If you are either landlord or tenant, there are some very important things to remember when it comes to gas safety. As a landlord, you have a range of legal obligations which you can find here: http://www.hse.gov.uk/gas/landlords/ On the other hand, if you are a tenant it is very important that you understand the landlord’s gas safety responsibilities and don’t do anything which could compromise these.
